Structural features
Brake disc: The brake disc is one of the most important parts of the brake system. It is usually made of cast iron, steel or carbon ceramic, and is connected to the wheel hub and rotates with the wheel.
Brake pads: Brake pads are used to create friction between the pads and the wheel disc to slow down movement. Brake pads are composed of metal shoes and linings. The lining is the part that contacts the wheel disc and is made of a variety of materials, which affects the service life of the brake system.
Piston: The piston is connected to the brake system through a hydraulic system. When the brake pedal of the machine or vehicle is pressed, it pushes the brake pads against the brake disc.
Calipers: Calipers fix the brake pads and press them against the brake disc when braking.
Maintenance matters
Check the brake position: Make sure the machine is level, the load is evenly distributed, and the load size and weight are within the tolerance of the equipment.
Verify the air gap: The air gap on both sides of the brake disc is critical to the braking system and should be kept consistent on both sides. Some industrial brakes have automatic wear adjustment features, but it is still a good habit to check the gap regularly.
Clean and lubricate the brake linkage: Cleaning the linkage helps ensure that the brake provides optimal performance. Debris or dirt on the linkage will reduce the braking torque and affect the braking effect. After cleaning, the linkage also needs to be lubricated to help the brake exert its full clamping force.
Check the brake pads: Check the lining thickness of the brake pads, because the lining will wear with use, and the lining that is too thin needs to be replaced. Modern brake pad materials are more practical and durable.
Observe rotor wear: Brake rotors convert kinetic energy into heat energy when braking. The service life of the rotor depends on many factors, such as rotor quality, heat dissipation, brake pad type, climate and operating conditions. Regularly checking rotor wear can help identify problems before they cause brake failure.
