Why can it be reused?
The SBD brake adopts a "spring force braking, hydraulic (or pneumatic) release" normally closed fail-safe design:
Braking principle: Under normal conditions, the spring presses the friction pad to lock the brake disc; the hydraulic station supplies oil to overcome the spring force before releasing the brake.
Reset method: In case of emergency braking or power loss and pressure loss, simply restoring the hydraulic station's pressure supply (or manually loosening the release screw) can reopen the brake and resume operation.
Design life: The fatigue life of the spring group is usually ≥ 1 million times. The friction pad is a replaceable consumable part, and only the pad needs to be replaced when it reaches the limit of wear.
Key points for inspection after emergency braking
Although the brake itself can be reused, after each emergency braking, the following checks should be performed before continuing operation:
Visual inspection of the friction pads - check for any ablation, cracking or abnormal uneven wear. If the thickness is below the wear limit (usually with a wear alarm switch), replacement is required.
Inspection of the brake discs - confirm that there are no obvious blueing (overheated annealing), deep grooves or cracks on the disc surface.
Hydraulic system - confirm there is no leakage, the oil level is normal, and the release pressure can reach the set value.
Gap recheck - if the gap has significantly increased, adjust according to the manual (SBDs often have automatic gap compensation).
The main application of SBD is for safety/ emergency brakes and static parking retention. It is not recommended to use it as a frequent high-frequency working brake (dynamic braking) for long periods. If the equipment is forcibly stopped by SBD during a high-speed descent with load (large inertia dynamic braking), special attention should be paid to whether the heat load exceeds the limit.
